Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP)

A structurally insulated panel is an engineered wood product that consists of two outer skins, generally made of oriented strand board (OSB), with an inner core of expanded polystyrene. When these components are pressure laminated together using an appropriate adhesive they form a strong structural panel. These panels are bounded by top and bottom plates which are connected to the panel using conventional nails or staples.

Global Panel Systems manufactures their structurally insulated panels in 4’x 8’ and 8’x 8’ sizes with varying thickness of expanded polystyrene, generally from 3 ½ “ to 5 ½ “ thick. These panels can then be joined together either by OSB splines or double 2” x 4” or 6” timber stud splines at the joints.

Optional electrical chases can be incorporated into the panels to make it easier for electricians to wire the finished structure.

Lintels for doors and windows are framed as in conventional framing.

David W. Lockhart
General Manager
David has been involved with insulated panel systems since the mid seventies. After 9 years as production manager for British Alcan in Scotland, David immigrated to Canada in 1986. He has remained involved in the laminating industry through a combination of manufacturing, research and development. By working in conjunction with Weyerhauser, Dow Chemicals and major adhesive companies, he has developed the product line that is now being manufacturerd by Global Panel Systems Inc.

Leonard Bennett
Construction Manager
Leonard brings to his position over fifteen years experience in the heavy construction industry, including oil, natural gas and pipeline installation. He is well experienced in both residential and industrial construction and renovations. Leonard oversees Global Panel Systems construction projects, and onsite training in the Global Panel building system as required.

Production and Training Supervisor
Steve oversees the manufacturing process, quality control and training of new employees at the Global Panel Systems manufacturing facilities.
 

• Global Panel Systems provide high insulating ability. With no framing to cause thermal loss, GPS offers 30%-40% more insulation value than is possible with conventionally framed structures.
• Moisture does not affect the insulating properties of the expanded polystyrene core.

  Energy Payback
  There are five reasons Global Panel Systems homes have lower heating and cooling bills than homes insulated with conventional wall and ceiling materials. A 4 1/2 inch GPS wall comparative to a 6 inch stick wall energy wise:

  • GPS foam panels achieve much higher thermal ratings than batt and filled materials. GPS foam panels achieve whole house thermal ratings of between R-17 and R-21 whereas conventional stud framing are between R-4 and R-6.
  • GPS panels use less wood than stick framing which reduces thermal bridging. A 16 foot GPS wall section with one 3X4 foot window contains 5% wood and 95% insulation. The same wall framed with 2x4s 16o.c. has 20% wood.
  • If not installed properly, batt insulation is susceptible to voids. Batts are either jammed into narrow cavities, improperly split around electrical boxes, or cut too short or too long. Renovations can result in insulation being removed but not replaced. When used with a truss system, batts won’t cover up the bottom chords. The Global Panel System eliminates these problems.
  • Any air moving within a conventionally insulated wall or ceiling decreases the performance of batt insulation. Global Panel Systems installations will virtually eliminate air movement within walls.
  • Global panels, properly installed and sealed will lend itself to tighter than average construction. This is especially true when using Global Panel Systems products for both walls and ceiling as the systems are engineered to connect easily and effectively to one another.
     

  Labour Savings
  Global Panel Systems are competitively priced compared to conventional stick built construction when all building costs are considered. Global Panel Systems eliminates much of the labour involved in constructing a new home or commercial building as the panels require no framing or structural support. A newly trained three person crew can enclose a 1500 square foot house in three days or less with minimum supervision.
  
  Space Savings
  In addition, 4 inch walls create two inches of extra usable space at the room perimeter compared to a 6 inch wall, which can add up to 23 or more square feet on a 1200 sq ft house house.
  
  Health
  Mould thrives when three factors are present in your home: air circulation, moisture and a nutrient base. All three factors can exist in a typical exterior wall. These contaminants which originate in your walls and can spread to paneling and duct systems. Typical home construction allows moisture to enter and condense within the wall cavities. The GPS structurally insulated panels eliminate air circulation and moisture, preventing the growth of mould, mildew wood decay and allergens. This single factor can greatly reduce or eliminate allergic reactions, and promote healthy living for your entire family.
  
  Fire Resistance
  Global Panel Systems offer greater fire resistance than traditional stick frame construction. Should a fire start in your building flames cannot travel inside the walls because there is no air entrapment within the wall cavity.
  
  Environmental
  Global Panel Systems is working to utilize the raw materials that go into their products efficiently. GPS panels use up to 35% less raw timber, there is less landfill use due to job site waste and lower energy consumption. Research and development is ongoing to continue
